Longley successfully completed the replacement of Air Handling Units (AHUs) serving South Essex College, delivering an important upgrade to the building’s ventilation and air conditioning systems. The project was undertaken within a live educational environment, requiring careful planning and coordination to minimise disruption to students, staff and visitors throughout the works.
The project involved the removal of existing rooftop Air Handling Units and the installation of new plant equipment, alongside associated alterations to the supporting gantry steelwork. A carefully coordinated programme of crane lifts was undertaken to facilitate the removal of existing equipment, clearance of waste materials and positioning of the new units on the roof.
Due to the college remaining operational throughout the project, comprehensive traffic management arrangements were implemented to establish safe lifting zones and maintain access for pedestrians and vehicles. Close liaison with the relevant authorities and college representatives was essential to ensuring the works could be carried out safely and efficiently.
Following the removal of the existing equipment, alterations were made to the gantry steelwork to accommodate the replacement units, before the new plant was installed. The works were carefully sequenced to maintain progress while minimising the impact on the day-to-day operation of the college.
The completed upgrade provides improved air circulation, filtration and conditioning throughout the building, contributing to a comfortable, efficient and healthy indoor environment for students, staff and visitors. The project demonstrates Longley’s ability to successfully deliver complex mechanical engineering works within a live educational setting, while maintaining high standards of safety and coordination.
