Railway Arch – Refurbishment
Client: Student Accommodation Provider
Sector: Leisure
Value: £3m

A comprehensive refurbishment project was successfully delivered at Chapter Westminster, transforming three historic railway arches into modern, multi-functional amenity spaces for students. The development carefully combines the original character of the railway arches with contemporary design and functionality, creating a welcoming environment for students to study, socialise and relax.

The project involved an extensive programme of structural alterations and internal refurbishment works, including steelwork, specialist timber panelling and the installation of a specialist floating floor system. These works were undertaken to adapt the existing spaces for their new purpose, while retaining the distinctive architectural features of the historic setting.

The refurbishment also included new glazing, mechanical and electrical installations, bespoke joinery, internal finishes and a complete interior fit-out. Audio-visual and IT systems were integrated throughout, alongside the installation of furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E), providing modern, functional spaces designed to meet the needs of students.

The completed development features a welcoming reception area, kitchenette, dedicated study zones and a versatile games lounge that also doubles as a cinema. Each area has been thoughtfully designed to maximise the available space, offering a balance of practical study facilities and comfortable social environments.

Following the successful completion and handover, the three refurbished railway arches now provide high-quality, adaptable amenity spaces that enhance the student experience at Chapter Westminster. The transformation demonstrates how existing buildings can be successfully repurposed to meet modern requirements while preserving their unique character.
